Plantain or Banana?

How many of us know about plantain? Probably most of us Filipinos don’t know about plantain. But quite ironically, this is the very staple food that some of us eat as a substitute to rice.

Yes, plantain is a type of banana that we use for cooking. To most Filipinos, we call the cooking type of banana as saba and indeed in Filipino lexicon, there’s no other term for the cooking banana but saba.

In Cebu, we have two types of plantain that we commonly grow in our farm and in our backyard. These are the sab-a and cardaba.

New Members, Welcome to COFGA!

I know how happy and thankful we are to see new faces to our fold. That goes to show that COFGA is growing albeit slowly. But growing doesn’t mean to grow in numbers alone. Growing in numbers is just one of the indications that our organization is working its way towards its goal.

COFGA’s Milestone

First of all, in behalf of the officers and the Board, I’d like to express my sincere gratitude to all those who came to the monthly meeting last Saturday, August 4. You’ve shown us your unwavering support to our fledgling organization which, in so short a time, is proud to have accomplished some things that we all never thought we could.

But because of our concerted effort and trust each other’s ability and with God’s blessing, we are able to hold things together and keep this organization strong. And we couldn’t be more thankful to all of us who really see the value of unity in everything we do in the name of COFGA.

A Visit to Butchoy Goat’s Farm

Whenever I hear the word Butchoy, the first thing that comes to my mind is that of a pot-bellied boy in a Pinoy comic strip of yester-year. If you call someone Butchoy, you’re not giving him a complimentary remark, rather you’re offending him.

But not this man, they call him, yes, Butchoy.

I long heard from my co-members the name Butchoy several times before. He’s a well-known man not because of his notoriety in his town but because of his farming activities. They don’t fail to always mention his name every time we take our conversation to goats and bananas.

So when the group decided to go on a trip to Borbon for Nong Rudy’s birthday celebration last weekend (July 28, 2007), we made a side trip to Butchoy’s goat farm. After the sumptuous lunch of stewed chevon Nong Rudy’d wife had prepared for us, we set off to his farm less than a mile away on a scenic portion beside the sea.
