COFGA’s First Christmas Party

December 14 was a red-letter day for COFGA as it marked its first Christmas party since its founding over a year ago in September 2006.

Although some were not able to come due to some reasons, the affair was nonetheless a resounding success with the whole set of inductees including the members of the Board and officers were in full force.

Leading the attendees were Mr. President himself and other officers including Lea Villegas, Nilo Villaflor, Vin Jayme, Mar Carloman, Jorge Matig-a, and Mr. Veep Momong Marimbao who gladly took the challenge to be the Master of the Ceremonies and he did it effectively.

Among the regular members who attended the party were the Board members Gabe Deligero, Desiderio Benitez, Rudy Monleon, and this author. Read the rest of this entry »

OrganiChristmas 2007

You might be wondering what event is OrganiChristmas 2007.

Of course, this is a major event happening soon, at least within the COFGA circle. I said major event because this is how it should be treated.

Okay, keep reading so that you will know what is this all about.

I think everyone already knew that we’ll be having our first Christmas party this year. In this regard, I was thinking that this event shouldn’t be just another Christmas party happening somewhere else. It should be a bit different from other Christmas parties.

November 17 Meeting Venue Changed

Due to some issues raised by some members as of late, the original venue that the group had concurred during the previous meeting had been changed.

So instead of Mulao (Compostela), the venue shall be the usual meeting place at the DA compound. However, since Dr. Dabucol’s office can no longer hold the growing number of attendees in recent months, exact venue shall be either the chapel or the MPH (multipurpose hall) in order to accommodate all of us more comfortably.

So I’d like to reiterate that our next meeting will no longer be held in Mulao. The date remains the same, (Saturday, November 17) however.

Agenda include our upcoming Christmas Party and General Assembly Meeting and other important matters.

I hope everyone will take note of this update and I hope to see you there! If you have issues regarding this matter and other issues regarding COFGA in particular,  please contact me at 261-9074 or 0927-4584490.

Mulao is Alive!

It was over five months ago when we had our first trip to Mulao, Compostela. On that trip, we took a survey of the prospective site for our demo farm on organic farming. And it was the height of dry season and the searing heat of the sun baked the soil and caused shallow-rooted plants to wilt. A sight remisniscent of a great drought during the early 80’s.

Nonetheless, I was impressed and others seemed impressed too. Not by the wilting plants and the cracking topsoil now heavily dessicated as a result of intense heat that scorched everything on earth. However, as a farmer, I can tell if the soil is rich in essential nutrients needed for the crops to grow well, judging on the kind of weeds growing in it. So I readily concluded that Mulao could be a great site for our demo farm.

Plantain or Banana?

How many of us know about plantain? Probably most of us Filipinos don’t know about plantain. But quite ironically, this is the very staple food that some of us eat as a substitute to rice.

Yes, plantain is a type of banana that we use for cooking. To most Filipinos, we call the cooking type of banana as saba and indeed in Filipino lexicon, there’s no other term for the cooking banana but saba.

In Cebu, we have two types of plantain that we commonly grow in our farm and in our backyard. These are the sab-a and cardaba.
